review
Journal of the British Shiatsu Society
by Teresa Hadland
summer 2010

The book is divided into three parts and each part comprises three chapters. In each part, these three chapters cover in turn the torso, the legs and the arms, and each time they are revisited they are viewed from a slightly different angle. Each chapter has a title and theme, usually represented by an image. It includes an explanation of the principles behind the theme, often the historical or evolutionary background to it, and is illustrated with images, some historical and others about how to apply the principles in everyday life.

For example Chapter 4, entitled the 'Gate to the Origin', talks about the diaphragm and the image here is of a mushroom and stalk, with the top of the mushroom representing the diaphragm and the stalk representing the crura and the psoas muscles connected to the spine. The author talks about the
evolution of the spine and describes an exercise to strengthen the Dan Tian, stating that 'we use the physical posture to give breathing it's original
strength and depth'. This underlines the pervading theme of'being' rather than 'doing'.

I particularly liked the way in which Peter den Dekker gives anecdotes of meetings with a few of the people who have influenced his practice the most. These are all masters, whether of tempeh-making or Chi Kung, and he describes how his years of studying with Master Lam Kam-Chuen in London have influenced his ideas about how to learn and teach Chi Kung. Rather than having to understand in your mind the theory behind what you' re doing, which is how we are used to learning things in the West, 'you take the unanswered question along with you in the exercise and step by step the body will understand by itself'. This is definitely an attitude we need to adopt if we want to get the most out of the practice.

This is not a book you can carry around in your pocket but a very beautifully presented and substantial tome that would take pride of place on any coffee table! Although each chapter builds and expands on the previous ones, it is also a book that can be dipped into. It is very pleasing and easy on the eye with a wealth of photos and illustrations. Although Peter den Dekker is also a Shiatsu therapist and acupuncturist he does not devote a lot of time to meridians. Nonetheless, it is obvious that an understanding of the deeper energies of the body that are engaged by this practice, is central to the book and this can help inform anyone with an interest in working with and gaining a greater understanding of, human beings. This book cannot fail to nourish and recharge the batteries of all who read it.

The dynamics of standing still
